Needless to say, our trip was cut short. We immediately turned back around and headed to the Academy. The trip was basically silent. The only sound was the sloshing of our boots as we made our way back down the mountain and back into the city. No one was talking about what we had seen. We were all wrapped up in our heads. Including me.

I couldn’t sort out the logic of it. How could a monster like a phoenix produce an egg? I wasn’t completely sure how monsters reproduced in the first place, but I knew that this had to be something special, out of the norm. Not to mention the fact that this was a Behemoth. If one of the Behemoths was reproducing, what did that mean if anything?

I couldn’t be sure, and I definitely needed more information. One of the first things I wanted to do when we got back to the Academy was to write to Rusty and Professor Ryder. Maybe they would have more information about this and could clue us in on what the hell might be going on.

Then there was the added weird factor: the screaming in my head. I had been compelled and transported like that before, when I had connected with other Behemoths. But I usually had to meet the Behemoth first, touch them even. Could I possibly have a connection with Vuure without ever having met it? Was that even possible?

I knew that I just had to focus on the road ahead of me, putting one foot in front of the other because the more I thought about the unusualness of the situation, the more tangled I got. And I would not sort out anything with as little information as I had.

We ventured back to the Academy, and Dara immediately cut the class short. I was relieved, knowing that I could go call Rusty and Professor Ryder, and maybe get my friends’ thoughts on everything. But then Dara surprised me by calling out my name.

“Tyler,” she said sternly, a professional voice that was so very different from the flirtatious one she normally used with me. My back stiffened, and I knew I needed to pay attention to her.

“I need you to come with me,” Dara ordered. “I’m going to tell the Masters about what we saw and I want them to describe what happened to you.”

I opened my mouth to speak, but Dara didn’t let me get a word out. She beckoned me forward with her hand as she started off down the hallway. I looked over my shoulder at my friends and they all looked at me with various expressions. But it was Abi who I was drawn to the most. She offered me a consolatory nod.

“Go on,” Abi encouraged me. “Tell the Masters. They’ll listen to you.”

I nodded in reply before I hurried down the hallway behind Dara.

We reached Master Irashi’s classroom, where he was teaching a lower-level group of students. Dara didn’t even bother to knock. She barged right into the room, eyes wide and alert.
